We acknowledge and salute the many activists in our city and county who have served the needs of our community for decades. They are our heroes and teachers and we are in their debt.

Our hope is that The Progressive Center will become one more voice to bring local matters to the attention of others. Our intention is to urge increased support for the people and organizations who lead the way for social justice and community service.

The Progressive Center of Texas operates under the classical definition of progressive shown above - always evolving, improving, and moving forward. Your input, membership, and leadership will influence the direction of the organization and content of its programs. This is your activist community center and home and we will do all we can to ensure that you feel welcome.

We strongly believe in and adhere to core values including diversity, inclusiveness, open-mindedness, and respect.

We will not be shy about being provocative. We aspire to challenge assumptions, preconceived ideas, and conventional ways of doing things. We believe this time calls for transformation on a grand scale – in the way we think, cooperate, collaborate, organize and lead. We believe that, together, we can ensure that democracy works equally for all.

When we envision the future, when we imagine what we have created together, we hope to see fewer barriers between communities. We hope to see a place, a center where people of all races, religions, economic and experiential background feel welcome to congregate and talk, a place where activists meet one another and provide support and understanding, a place filled with older and younger people who never saw themselves as leaders and who can now see themselves no other way.

The Progressive Center is a dynamic, issue-oriented, grassroots-driven, nonprofit 501(c)4 enterprise determined to produce an educated voter, engaged citizen, and new leadership in our community and government. We decided on this structure because, unlike a 501(c)3 organization, a 501(c)4 organization can take an active and visible role in lobbying for social justice and social welfare.

The Progressive Center will provide to the community:

• Voter registration and voter education
• Analysis of city, county, and state government
• Issues research
• Collective action on community issues
• Training for community organizers and activists
• Educational conferences and forums
• A home for progressives
• A clearing house and resource center for progressive political action

Our goal is to offer a unique combination of education, leadership training, and community organizing, and to create a legacy enterprise that serves our community for years to come.
